“When It Rains” is a painting that was inspired by the elders. Native Americans have a special connection with the land, elements and spiritual teachings of all things within the universe. The painting to me depicts hair and rain. Most elders stress upon the importance of long hair and associating long hair with long streams of rain. So in the painting there are stars featured on the top portion. Which to me represent our place in the heavens?  (Something greater). On top of the Female rain figure are feathers white eagle plumes that represent the clouds. The woman is like mother earth. The hair is the rain that falls from the clouds. She has long strands of hair which is the equivalent to an abundance of moisture. On the face mask are various lighting pattern designs as well as rain designs. The painting features a piece of trillion Orange Spinney Oyster. The painting is 9x12” and it is acrylic. I hope this painting encourages the youth to grow their hair long and wear it proudly.
